Intellectual Freedom Podcast
Intellectual freedom is not just a buzzword. It is a fundamental necessity for human civilization and your life's flourishing. It is the essence of the human spirit to question, explore, and seek answers to the most profound questions that confront us every day.
Without intellectual freedom, we are but slaves to the whims of those in power, unable to challenge authority, push boundaries, or pursue truth. In our post-modern world, ignorance and oppression weigh heavy on all of us, stifling creativity, innovation, and progress. The quest for knowledge is not a luxury. It is a basic human need. Only through intellectual freedom can we unlock the full potential of our collective intellect and build a brighter future for all.
This podcast explores topics in culture, philosophy, wisdom literature, and complex problems we all confront in life.

# 160: Take Command of Your Mind or Someone Else Will | Meditations, part 1
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Every day, something is competing to make your decisions for you.
Politicians want your fear. Advertisers want your dissatisfaction. Algorithms want your attention. Other people want your approval, your agreement, your obedience, or at the very least, a permanent room inside your head.
Marcus Aurelius understood the danger nearly 1,900 years ago. He ruled an empire, commanded armies, endured war, plague, betrayal, and political chaos—and still recognized that the most important territory he would ever govern was the territory within himself.
This episode begins a chapter-by-chapter journey through Meditations, one of the most enduring works of Stoic philosophy ever written. But this series is not about admiring an ancient emperor from a distance. It is about using his private exercises to recover command of your own judgment, attention, decisions, habits, and response to the world.
Book I begins in an unexpected place: gratitude. Marcus does not praise himself or list his accomplishments. He records the people, hardships, teachers, and painful experiences that shaped him. In doing so, he exposes the myth of the self-made individual and demonstrates the first requirement of self-mastery: an honest accounting of who you are, what formed you, and which influences you will continue to obey.
Throughout this series, Dr. David D. Hopkins will examine how Marcus Aurelius trained himself to resist ego, distraction, resentment, fear, social pressure, and the emotional chaos of the world around him. Each episode will extract the wisdom, knowledge, perspective, and nuance of Meditations so that you can think freely, live wisely, make stronger decisions, and achieve practical success.
The world will continue trying to command your mind.
This series is about taking it back.
